Elgin, Texas The City of Elgin was established by the Houston and Texas Central Railroad on August 18, 1872 and named for Robert Morris Elgin, the railroad’s land commissioner. In the early days of the railroad, many new railroad towns were named after the officers of the applicable railroad company. If not for a major flood in 1869, the city of Elgin may not have been. At the time the railroad was to have been 10 miles to the east. When the river rose up over 60 feet, a new line was surveyed. The railroad now would go through Elgin on its way to Austin. Brick manufacturing was a prominent industry in Elgin at one time. So great was the industry that Elgin was once known as the “Brick Capital of the Southwest”. Also in the area is light industry and agriculture. One of the most favorite things about Elgin is its hot sausage. There are four companies which make the delicious sausage. Elgin is also known as the “Sausage Capital of Texas.” Elgin also has over 50 dealers of antiques and collectibles. Its past is important to Elgin residents with many beautiful, old homes here which have been refurbished and restored. So well preserved and renovated are these historic areas that they are often used by movie companies for their location sets. Courtesy of www.uscitiesonline.com/txcountyelgin
